web consulting project assists users in preparing for language tests

The International English Language Testing System wanted to offer a test preparation website for its English proficiency exam.

There is a high demand for test equipment. The IELTS test was taken by 3.5 million people worldwide in 2018, the most recent year for which statistics are available. The British Council-owned IELTS organization cited the internationalization of higher education and a more mobile international workforce as factors driving the volume of applicants.

The British Council is a non-profit organization that promotes cultural exchange and educational opportunities in the United Kingdom.

Computools was contracted by IELTS to provide consulting, development, and web hosting services for its test preparation platform. The company has offices in the US, Israel, and Europe. Computools' Ukrainian subsidiary worked on the IELTS project.

A multi-staged project

Computools' effort started with a consulting phase to learn about IELTS objectives, propose a project approach, and define the scope of work.

The company then created prototypes and collaborated with IELTS to determine the best design option. According to the company, Computools went through several stages of the project, including website design, initial DevOps, business analysis, and eventually WordPress development and quality assurance, using the Scrum management framework.

User research, UX and service design, portal development, website hosting setup, analysis, and project lifecycle management were also part of the project. Computools met the British Council's branding requirements, provided email notification functionality, and a responsive web design that supported multiple device types.

Computools collaborated closely with IELTS to meet tight deadlines and coordinate website development, release stages, and deployment. To communicate and meet project milestones, organizations used a variety of tools, including Microsoft Teams, Skype, and Atlassian's Jira project management tool.

Increase in revenue

The test prep site is now operational, allowing users to learn about IELTS exams, review study materials, and take online tests. The use of these online resources has increased IELTS user traffic by 56%. According to Computools, the platform also assisted IELTS in increasing orders and sales – IELTS language services revenue increased by 45 percent.
